The visiting school, certified by the Architectural Association in London, examines the in-between spaces of Mediterranean port cities in the context of historical and contemporary conditions of urban politics. This year, our program will be located in the center of Izmir to view the recurring condition of displacement and its effects on the city. Our program is open to graduate and undergraduate students, PhD candidates, and young professionals interested in migration, including those in architecture, archaeology, anthropology, history of art, migration studies, cultural studies, development studies, and related fields.

The program will offer lectures and seminars covering topics of displacement and resettlement, followed by relevant fieldwork. Participants will have the opportunity to gain field experience observing self-made spaces of migrants, understand contemporary methodologies to house lower-class emigrants, find cultural elements embedded in the social and built environment, visit preserved structures of Sephardic Jewish architectural heritage, and observe the effects of significant events in Mediterranean migration, such as the Greek population exchange of 1923. Local architectural and anthropological elements will be documented using recording methods, collection of objects, and mapping. The outcome will be a small-scale intervention derived from findings, exhibited together with a street dinner in the neighborhood.

We would appreciate your help in sharing this program to your students. If you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact;
